Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level (1975), developed for the U.S. Navy to gauge technical manual readability, uses the same two underlying inputs but rescales the result into an approximate U.S. school grade level. Gunning Fog Index (1952) instead focuses on the percentage of 'complex' words (three or more syllables) combined with sentence length, on the theory that long words are a stronger readability signal than syllables spread evenly across shorter words. SMOG Index (1969), designed specifically for healthcare and public-information materials, estimates the grade level needed for full comprehension (not just basic reading), and is calculated from complex-word count and sentence count alone. Coleman-Liau Index (1975) breaks from the syllable-counting approach entirely, using character (letter) counts instead — which makes it fast to calculate by hand and less prone to syllable-counting edge cases, at a small cost in nuance.
Every formula in this tool, despite their different math, is built from essentially the same two underlying signals: how long your sentences are, and how complex (long, multi-syllable) your words are. Long sentences force a reader to hold more information in working memory before reaching a full stop, which measurably increases cognitive load and comprehension errors, especially for readers who aren't fluent or highly practiced in the subject matter. Long, unfamiliar, or multi-syllable words take longer to recognize and process than short, common ones — even for skilled readers — which is why formula after formula, developed independently across seven decades, all converge on these same two factors as the dominant drivers of measured readability.
It's possible to over-optimize for readability scores at the expense of actual clarity or necessary precision — chopping every sentence to the same short length can make writing feel choppy and disconnected, and stripping out every technical term can make specialist content vague or even incorrect. The most effective approach is to use these scores as a directional check against your intended audience, not a hard target to minimize at all costs: aim for scores that comfortably match your readers' expected reading level (60+ Flesch score for general web content is a reasonable, widely-used benchmark), vary sentence length naturally rather than mechanically uniform, and keep necessary technical vocabulary where it's genuinely required for accuracy, explaining it briefly on first use rather than avoiding it altogether.
