Cropping extracts a chosen rectangular region from an image and discards everything outside it, producing a new, smaller image containing only that selected area at its original resolution. It's one of the most fundamental image editing operations, used constantly to remove unwanted background or clutter, refocus attention on a specific subject, or reshape an image to fit a particular aspect ratio required by a specific platform or layout — a square profile picture, a widescreen banner, a portrait-oriented thumbnail. Unlike resizing (which changes an image's overall pixel dimensions by resampling) or compressing (which reduces file size by adjusting encoding quality), cropping changes only which part of the original image survives into the output, at full original fidelity.

An aspect ratio preset locks your selection box to a fixed width-to-height proportion while still letting you freely resize and reposition it — 1:1 keeps a perfect square at any size, 16:9 keeps the same widescreen proportion whether the selection is small or large, and so on. This matters because many platforms and layouts expect a specific, consistent aspect ratio (a square avatar, a widescreen video thumbnail, a specific banner shape), and manually eyeballing a freeform selection to match that exact ratio by hand is slow and error-prone. Free mode removes this constraint entirely for situations where you just want to trim an image down to an arbitrary shape without any proportional requirement.
These three operations are often confused but do genuinely different things. Cropping changes which part of the original image is kept, without altering the pixel density or quality of whatever region survives. Resizing changes an image's overall pixel dimensions, resampling every pixel to fit a new width and height, which can affect sharpness depending on the direction of the resize. Compressing changes a file's storage size by adjusting how efficiently (and how losslessly) its pixel data is encoded, without changing its dimensions at all. Cropping to a square is the most common preparation step for social media profile pictures and avatar-style images. Cropping to 16:9 is standard for video thumbnails, hero banners, and most modern widescreen display contexts. Cropping to 4:3 or 3:2 suits more traditional photo and print-oriented layouts. Beyond matching a specific required ratio, cropping is also simply one of the most effective ways to improve a photo's composition after the fact — removing distracting background clutter, tightening the frame around a subject, or straightening up an off-center original — all without needing any more sophisticated editing tool than a precise, well-controlled crop selection.
