A Systematic Investment Plan lets an investor commit to investing a fixed amount into a chosen mutual fund scheme on a set recurring date — most commonly monthly — rather than investing a lump sum all at once. Each installment is auto-debited from the investor's bank account and used to purchase mutual fund units at that day's Net Asset Value (NAV), so over the life of the SIP, the investor accumulates units purchased across many different price points rather than a single price. Over many months spanning different market conditions, this rupee cost averaging effect tends to smooth out the investor's average purchase price relative to what a single lump-sum investment made at one arbitrary point in time would have achieved. It doesn't guarantee a SIP will outperform a lump-sum investment in every single scenario — a lump sum invested right before a sustained bull run can still outperform a SIP spread across that same period — but it substantially reduces the specific risk of committing a large sum of money right before a market downturn, which is exactly the kind of risk many retail investors are least equipped to absorb.
