Moon Phase Calendar

See today's moon phase, a full monthly calendar of moon phases, the next full and new moon with a countdown, the current moon sign, and the best days this month for planting, fishing, haircuts, and manifestation.

How To Use

  1. 1.Today's moon phase, its position in the lunar cycle, and the current moon sign appear automatically at the top — no input needed.
  2. 2.The Next Moon Events card shows the exact date of the next full moon and next new moon, each with a live days/hours countdown.
  3. 3.Use the arrows on the Monthly Calendar to browse any month — every day shows its moon phase emoji at a glance, with today highlighted.
  4. 4.The Best Days card lists which dates this month are traditionally favorable for planting, fishing, haircuts, and manifestation, based on the phase each day falls in.
  5. 5.Copy the full result to your clipboard, download it as a text file, or share a link to this tool. Use Reset to jump back to the current month.

About Moon Phase Calendar

The Eight Phases of the Moon

As the Moon orbits Earth roughly every 29.5 days, the portion of it lit by the Sun and visible from Earth changes in a predictable, repeating cycle traditionally divided into eight named phases. New Moon marks the start of the cycle, when the Moon sits between Earth and the Sun and its near side is unlit — invisible from Earth. Over the following two weeks, the illuminated portion grows (waxes) through Waxing Crescent, First Quarter (half-lit), and Waxing Gibbous, culminating in the Full Moon, when the Moon sits opposite the Sun and its entire near side is lit. From there, the illuminated portion shrinks (wanes) through Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter (half-lit again, the mirror of First Quarter), and Waning Crescent, before returning to New Moon and starting the cycle again. This tool calculates exactly where in that eight-phase cycle any given date falls, using the Moon's well-documented average orbital period.

How the Calculation Works, Step by Step

The core calculation converts a calendar date into a Julian Date — a single continuous number astronomers use instead of a year/month/day breakdown, which makes date arithmetic simple. It then measures the difference between that Julian Date and a known reference point (a New Moon that occurred on January 6, 2000), and takes that difference modulo the Moon's average synodic period of 29.53058867 days — the precise, well-documented average time between one New Moon and the next. The result is the Moon's 'age': how many days have passed since the most recent New Moon, somewhere between 0 and about 29.5. That age is then compared against the traditional day-ranges for each of the eight phases (New Moon at 0–1 days, Waxing Crescent at 1–7, and so on) to determine which phase is currently showing.

Understanding the Moon Sign

While the Sun takes a full year to travel through all twelve zodiac signs (which is why your sun sign only depends on your birth month and day), the Moon completes the same journey roughly every 27.3 days — meaning it changes zodiac sign every two to three days. This tool estimates the Moon's zodiacal position using its mean orbital longitude, a standard simplified astronomical formula that tracks the Moon's average motion without modeling every small gravitational perturbation from the Sun and planets. The result is accurate enough to correctly identify the Moon's sign for the great majority of dates, with a small chance of being off by one sign right at a boundary transition — a limitation shared by any moon-sign calculator that doesn't run a full ephemeris.

Traditional Lunar Timing for Everyday Activities

Long before satellite forecasts and modern agriculture, farmers, gardeners, and fishers across many cultures tracked the Moon's phase to time their work, and many of those traditions persist today in almanacs and folk calendars. The general logic behind lunar gardening holds that the Moon's waxing light (growing from New to Full) favors growth-oriented activities — planting above-ground crops and, by extension, cutting hair for faster regrowth — while the waning half favors activities associated with rest, pruning, or root development. Separately, 'solunar theory,' popularized in the early 20th century, links increased wildlife (especially fish) activity to the New Moon and Full Moon, when the combined gravitational pull of the Moon and Sun on Earth's tides is at its strongest. This tool applies both traditions consistently, day by day, based on each date's calculated phase.

Manifestation and the Lunar Cycle

In more contemporary spiritual and self-development practice, the New Moon and Full Moon are often treated as the two anchor points of a monthly ritual cycle: the New Moon, with the Moon's light at its lowest, is associated with setting new intentions and starting fresh — a symbolic blank slate. The Full Moon, at peak illumination roughly two weeks later, is associated with culmination, high energy, and release — a natural point to reflect on progress or let go of what isn't serving you. This tool flags both of these dates each month as favorable for manifestation work, alongside the calculated moon phase for every other day, so you can plan intention-setting or reflection practices around the actual lunar calendar rather than an arbitrary date.

Using This Calendar Alongside Real Plans

Whether or not you find personal meaning in lunar timing traditions, this tool is built to be a genuinely useful reference calendar: an at-a-glance view of exactly which moon phase falls on which date, for any month you want to check, computed with real astronomical arithmetic rather than a lookup table that needs updating. Gardeners, photographers planning around moonlight, stargazers timing a dark-sky session around the New Moon, or anyone simply curious what the sky looked like on a specific date can all use the same monthly view and next-event countdowns. The traditional 'best days' guidance is there as an optional layer on top — useful if that framework resonates with you, and easy to ignore if you're just here for the astronomy.

FAQs

This tool uses a well-established astronomical approximation: it converts a given date to a Julian Date (a continuous day count astronomers use), measures how many days have elapsed since a known reference New Moon (January 6, 2000), and takes the remainder after dividing by the Moon's average synodic period — about 29.53 days, the time from one New Moon to the next. That remainder, the Moon's 'age' in days, is then mapped to one of eight named phases, from New Moon through Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter, and Waning Crescent. Every calculation runs as local arithmetic in your browser — no external service or API call is involved.

It's accurate to within about a day for virtually any date, which is precise enough to correctly identify which of the eight named phases a given date falls into. The small margin of error comes from using the Moon's long-term average synodic period rather than modeling its actual orbital mechanics, which vary slightly month to month due to the Moon's elliptical orbit and other gravitational effects — a trade-off every simple, API-free moon phase calculator makes, and one that essentially never changes which named phase is reported for a given day.

The Moon travels all the way around the zodiac roughly every 27.3 days (much faster than the Sun, which takes a full year), passing through a new sign about every 2.3 days on average. This tool estimates the Moon's position using its mean (average, unperturbed) orbital motion — a standard, well-documented astronomical approximation — rather than a full ephemeris that accounts for every gravitational perturbation. That mean-motion approach is accurate to within a few degrees, which is enough to correctly identify the Moon's sign the vast majority of the time, but it can occasionally be off by one sign for dates very close to a sign-change boundary (which happens roughly every 2.3 days). Treat the moon sign shown as a solid estimate rather than the precision of a professional ephemeris.

Your regular zodiac sign — the one most people mean by 'my sign' — is your sun sign, based on where the Sun appeared to be against the zodiac on your birth date, and it only changes about once a month across the whole year. The Moon sign shown here is a completely different, much faster-moving placement: because the Moon circles the zodiac roughly every 27.3 days instead of the Sun's full year, the moon sign changes every couple of days. In a full astrological birth chart, your personal Moon sign (calculated from your exact birth date, time, and location) is traditionally associated with emotional instinct and inner reactions, as distinct from your sun sign's broader personality traits — but the moon sign shown here reflects today's (or the selected date's) moon sign, not your personal birth-chart Moon sign.

These follow long-standing folk and traditional lunar calendar conventions. Planting and haircuts (for growth) are traditionally considered favorable during the Moon's waxing phases — Waxing Crescent through Waxing Gibbous — on the folk logic that growing energy mirrors the Moon's own increasing light. Fishing follows a different, separate tradition (sometimes called 'solunar theory') that associates increased fish activity with the New Moon and Full Moon, when gravitational pull on tides is strongest. Manifestation work is traditionally tied to the Moon's two most symbolically significant points — the New Moon for setting new intentions, and the Full Moon for culmination and release. None of these are scientifically validated predictors of outcomes; they're traditional practices this tool applies consistently based on each day's actual calculated phase.

The moon phase and moon sign calculations themselves are real astronomy — verifiable, reproducible arithmetic based on the Moon's actual orbital motion. The 'best days' guidance for planting, fishing, haircuts, and manifestation, however, is traditional folklore, not agricultural science or biology. Some controlled studies have looked for a connection between lunar phase and plant growth or fish behavior and found the evidence inconclusive or absent at meaningful effect sizes. This tool presents the traditional guidance faithfully and consistently, exactly as long-standing lunar calendars have for generations, but you should treat it as a cultural tradition and a fun lens to plan around — not as agricultural or scientific advice.

Some phases last longer than others in this classification. New Moon and Full Moon are narrow windows (each about 1 day), while Waxing Crescent, Waxing Gibbous, Waning Gibbous, and Waning Crescent each span roughly 6 to 7 days — so it's completely normal to see the same phase emoji repeated across several consecutive days in the monthly view, since the Moon spends most of its 29.5-day cycle in these longer 'in-between' phases rather than at the four precise milestone points (New, First Quarter, Full, Last Quarter).

The countdown works backward from the same underlying phase calculation: knowing the Moon's current age (days since the last New Moon) and the average length of a full lunar cycle (about 29.53 days), this tool calculates exactly how many days remain until the age resets to zero (the next New Moon) or reaches roughly the midpoint of the cycle (the next Full Moon, at about 14.77 days). The result updates automatically once a minute so the countdown stays current without needing a page refresh.

This tool's Monthly Calendar view lets you browse any month, past or future, using the arrow controls — every date shown includes its calculated moon phase. If you specifically want to check the moon phase on a particular birth date alongside a full age breakdown, the Age Calculator tool includes a dedicated moon-phase-on-birth-date feature as part of its Age Today mode.

No — the moon phase and moon sign shown are calculated purely from the calendar date using your device's local time, and don't depend on your geographic location. The Moon's phase (how much of it is illuminated as seen from Earth) and its zodiacal position are the same worldwide at any given moment; only the exact local time of moonrise, moonset, and phase transitions varies slightly by time zone, which this tool accounts for automatically since it reads the date from your browser.

No — every calculation, including the entire monthly calendar, runs entirely in your browser using plain JavaScript date arithmetic. Nothing is transmitted to a server or stored anywhere.
